You’re sitting in the waiting room or maybe in front of your laptop, heart racing, palms sweaty, second-guessing every answer you prepped. Interviews can be brutal on the nerves. But why do we get so nervous? Let’s talk about it.

Why Do Interviews Make Us Nervous?

In most cases, nervousness in interviews isn’t about fear. It’s about uncertainty.
We feel nervous when we’re unsure what to expect or when we doubt whether we know enough to speak confidently.
The good news? That kind of nervousness has a solution. And it starts with research.

Tip 1: Research Your Way to Confidence

Here are three areas to focus on: 

    1. Research the organization.
      Go beyond the homepage. Look at their recent news, company values, major projects, and culture. Know what problems they’re solving and how you fit in.
    2. Research the interviewers.
      If you have their names, find them on LinkedIn. Understand their background, roles, and special interests. It makes them feel less intimidating and more relatable.
      (Remember, they’re people, not robots with a checklist.)
    3. Deep dive into the role.
      Don’t just read the job description once. Study it. Highlight key skills and responsibilities. Look at similar roles online. Ask someone in your network who’s done it before what their day-to-day looks like. The more familiar the role feels, the less you’ll fear being caught off guard.
Think about it: if I asked you to talk about your favourite football team or artist, you’d light up and never stumble. Why? Because you know it. That’s the power of research. It transforms anxiety into assurance.

Tip 2: Talk to Yourself- The Right Way

  1. After research, the next step is internal.

    Your mindset shapes your performance. If you go into an interview thinking,

    “I don’t know enough… I hope they don’t see through me,”
    you’ll carry that energy.

    But flip the script:

    “I’ve done the prep. I understand the role. I bring value they need.”

    That belief changes how you speak. Your tone steadies. Your words carry weight. You stop trying to convince and start to connect.

    Confidence is contagious. If you believe you belong in the room, others will too.
